it’s only taken like two weeks of listening to “hamilton” non-stop for “this story of america then, told by america now” to really sink in. the story works because it’s deliberately cast with poc – not to tell an alternate or ‘colourblind’ history, but because the story/history is the metaphor, not people. (it’s the opposite of stuff like x-men that take stories of oppression and centre them mainly on white guys.) we get to engage the themes of the story, in which being an immigrant (of colour, to the us-of-a) is something to be proud of (and you don’t even have to be a model minority), through today’s lens. i just love this so much.

#the show doesn’t ask us #‘what if jefferson had been black?’ #the show is very clear that jefferson was a white slaveowner #never mind that he’s played by daveed diggs #the show asks us #‘what if we looked at the hip-hop revolution through the lens of THAT revolution?’ we are never asked #‘what if general washington had been black?’ #we are instead asked #‘what if you could look at a black man wielding a black art form and could see general washington??’ (via sanguinarysanguinity)
